The firing process in a special mobile oven that had been moved to the nursery school’s garden.

This year, the children tried their hands at glazing some of the Rakuyaki pieces. They took care not to mix the colors of the brushes when putting on the white, yellow and turquoise blue glaze.

When the glazing was complete, the children proceeded directly to the firing. One firing takes about one hour. All of the children’s pieces were completed after three firings. According to Potter-san, the Rakuyaki firing went exceptionally well. He went so far as to say that it was probably the best conceivable turnout.

When the Rakuyaki works were removed from the 850° Celsius hot kiln and immersed into water, it immediately started to foam and bubble. The kids had a tense look on their faces when they watched the colors change. The children then took the newly finished works in their own hands and started evaluating each other’s pieces. Some children also observed the changes from before and after the firing by knocking on and smelling the finished product. The finished works were on display in nursery home main hall for a while, so kids from other grades and their parents could have a look at them.
